Chalk Grasslands: plant identification and conservation
Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June 2018
10am – 4 pm
This two-day workshop will introduce you to the beauty and diversity of Oxfordshire’s rich chalk grasslands. This special habitat, called ‘Europe’s tropical rainforest’, can contain up to 40 species of plants per square metre. Once widespread across the downs of southern England, it is estimated that more than 80% has been lost since WW2.
The course is suitable for all levels, including beginners. You will learn how to identify the plants of this special habitat, starting with some basic plant identification skills. We will spend most of our time outdoors, learning and practising plant identification and trying out some survey methods. You will also learn about habitat management and conservation.
The course will combine indoor presentations with plenty of time outdoors at Berrycroft Farm.
Dr Deborah Sazer has been studying, surveying and managing grasslands for over twenty years. She studied chalk grasslands for her PhD. Following her six years at Butterfly Conservation Wales, she has worked as a freelance ecologist on a range of species and habitats. She has been teaching wildlife identification, survey, monitoring, management and conservation since 2004.
What to bring:
A hand lens (x10)
A notebook and pencil/pen
Any plant identification books you may have.
Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.
Refreshments are provided on the day but not lunches. Please bring packed lunches on both days.
Not suitable for children.
We will be walking to and on steep grassland, so unfortunately the course is not accessible for wheelchairs or people unable to walk reasonable distances.
Accommodation is not included but if required it is available within the local area, some suggestions can be found on our 'local accommodation' page - please arrange this yourself.
