Introduction to Nalbinding 10am - 4pm

Trace this ancient craft from its prehistoric origins to its recent craft revival (and inclusion on the Red List of Endangered Crafts) whilst learning four different stitches including simple looping, Tarim stitch, York stitch and Oslo stitch. You will make sample swatches and begin a larger project you can continue at home.
The simple looping is known from Mesolithic and Neolithic sites but more complex nalbinding is perhaps most famous from early medieval examples though. In this workshop we will be concentrating on the prehistoric evidence and likely development of the techniques, with some examples from Roman Egypt, and then taking inspiration from Viking/early medieval examples to cover a wide date range.
