Iron Age sword workshop 10am -4pm
*MAXIMUM NUMBER FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS 2*
Using the traditional tools of the blacksmith, discover how to forge an Iron Age sword. Guided by professional blacksmith and living historian, Thomas B Timbrell of Big Beynon's Blacksmithing, you will forge your very own sword from mild steel on a bellows operated forge. Made in the style of the swords of the time, you will then harden the edges by cold working and then sharpen them using stones and files to produce your very own sword blade.
Full PPE will be provided for participants
Safety requirements for forging:
Age: 18+
Clothing:
- clothes worn for the course need to be made of wool, cotton or linen- no synthetics as these can melt to the skin.
- sturdy footwear to be worn, no converse, trainers or Doc Martens
Note for participants:
On this course, please remember that you will be pumping bellows and hammering both hot and cold metal which can cause vibrations in your arm. I maintain that you don't need great strength to attend the course but please be aware that it does involve physical activities. As such, if you have any concerns then please do get in touch.
