Winter Trees: Twigs & Buds - 20th January 2019 10-4pm
A one day workshop on winter tree identification using the newly published ‘Field Key to Winter Twigs’ by John Poland.
This workshop will be led by Sam Thomas an expert field botanist based in Oxford with a background in botanical research, teaching and recording. Sam holds a Level 6 Field Identification Skills Certificate from the BSBI indicating a botanist with ‘national status’ and ‘excellent ID skills’.
We will look at most of the commonly occurring groups of tree species as well as a number of deciduous shrubs.
The morning will be lab based and will involve looking in detail at provided specimens, understanding terminology and using keys to identify a range of species.
After lunch, there will be an outing to examine some species in the field. The afternoon lab session will look in detail at the species encountered on the field visit.
All participants should bring a copy of The Field Key to Winter Twigs by John Poland as the course will be based around this book. It is available from Summerfield books for between £18 and £20 (link below).
All participants should also bring a hand-lens (10x or 15x magnification is best, link for basic lens below).
Accommodation is not included but if required it is available within the local area, some suggestions can be found on our 'local accommodation' page - please arrange this yourself. Refreshments are provided on the day but not lunches.
