DISTAFF WORKSHOP - Saturday 18th November 2023 10am - 4pm
*MAXIMUM NUMBER FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS 8*
For decades the ‘drop’ spindle has been a useful entry point for those wanting to learn the craft of hand spinning, however its history in the UK is much shorter than many realise and medieval manuscripts contain many illustrations of women (and the occasional man) spinning wool into yarn using both a spindle and distaff.
The day will start with a PowerPoint presentation of the research behind the technique, following which Mary Cleaton, Jane Hunt and Alice Evans will show you how to dress a distaff with wool and how to spin from it, using both the in-hand and short suspension techniques, with a medieval style spindle. You will also be shown how to comb fleece, in preparation for spinning, with a pair of hand wool combs.
A basic spinning kit and fibre will be provided on the day and you may purchase the tools (£25-30) to take home with you if you wish. You may also take home any yarn which you have spun and fleece which you have combed.
In order to be able to benefit from this workshop you will need to have a knowledge of the basics of hand spinning, as the whole focus is on learning a new technique, rather than learning the basics.
