DISTAFF WORKSHOP - Saturday 10th June 2023 10am - 4pm
*MAXIMUM NUMBER FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS 12*
Medieval manuscripts contain many illustrations of people spinning wool into yarn using a spindle & distaff.
The distaff goes back in time beyond the medieval period as a method of spinning - at least to the pre-viking era of North Western Europe & Britain.
Distaff spinning is not dropping a spindle as spinning is often depicted.
During the workshop day, distaff spinning experts Mary Cleaton & Jane Hunt will share their research into distaff spinning. They will show you how to prepare wool fibres and dress a distaff before teaching the basics of distaff spinning.
Equipment will be available to purchase if you wish at the end of the workshop at a cost of £25.
in order to benefit from this workshop you will need to have a knowledge of the basics of hand spinning, as the whole focus is on learning a new technique, rather than learning to spin.
