Late Neolithic Bone Pendants 10am - 4pm
Late Neolithic Bone Pendants
Join archaeologist and heritage education specialist, Dr Frankie Callaghan in this workshop exploring prehistoric bone pendants - focusing in particular on those from the late Neolithic site of Skara Brae, Orkney, dating to c.3100 - 2500BC.
Workshop participants will be fully-guided through this immersive-learning process; utilising prehistoric methods and materials to craft their pendants. These include; period-accurate raw materials, flint tools, pigments and cordage - all of which participants can take home.
Following an interactive discussion on the archaeological evidence for both the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods; participants will get the opportunity to engage hands-on with their material culture through our handling collection - including replica and authentic artefacts based on finds from across Mesolithic and Neolithic Europe.
Before our lunch break, Frankie will demonstrate the prehistoric technology, tools and ancient skills used to craft these bone pendants to the group - after which participants will receive 1:1 guidance, as they begin to craft their own replica Neolithic bone pendants.
Guidance will be on-hand at all times.
