Amber & Bone working workshop Sunday 4th May 2025 10am - 4pm
*MAXIMUM NUMBER FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS 10*
Join archaeologist Vanessa Bunton to learn about amber and bone with their uses throughout history for personal ornamentation and a variety of decorative items.
On this workshop you will choose and authentically work your own raw amber or bone into a finished piece to take home with you. As part of the workshop, you will also learn how to make natural fibre cordage if your chosen piece requires being stung, such as a pendant.
Amber has been an important and reveered material from prehistory to the modern day. The earliest amber artefacts found have been large naturalistic-shaped pieces from the Mesolithic. Most commonly found in Jutland, these pieces have holes bored in them so they can be worn on a string.
Amber continued to be an important material throughout history with archaeological evidence of examples ranging from Egypt through to Europe. There are many artefacts that show Anglo-Saxons and Vikings were using amber to produce everything from beads to stunning miniatures.
