Guided by professional blacksmith and living historian, Thomas B Timbrell of Big Beynon's Blacksmithing, you will forge your very own knife from mild steel on a bellows operated forge. After forging your knife blade to shape, you shall refine the blade and hammer harden it before fitting it into a simple wooden handle. Once fitted, you shall learn how to sharpen and maintain your knife and you'll even get a chance to personalise the handle. Each participant will finish the course with a knife that they have made themselves from start to finish and is ready to be used right away!
These knives are based on archeological finds from throughout history and can be found in almost every period from the Iron Age through to the 17th Century.
Full PPE will be provided for participants
Safety requirements for forging:
Age: 18 +
Clothing:
- clothes worn for the course need to be made of wool, cotton or linen- no synthetics as these can melt to the skin.
- sturdy footwear to be worn, no converse, trainers or Doc Martens
Note for participants:
On this course, please remember that you will be pumping bellows and hammering both hot and cold metal which can cause vibrations in your arm. I maintain that you don't need great strength to attend the course but please be aware that it does involve physical activities. As such, if you have any concerns then please do get in touch.
