Ancient Cooking workshop:

During this workshop participants will learn how to manage, use efficiently and maintain a cooking fire (which sounds simple, but is often misunderstood!). They will then experience first hand various historical cooking techniques from Prehistory up to the medieval ages with a slight focus on the Iron Age : cooking in replica clay pots, using metal cauldron, viking-style frying pan and sets of historic knives with specific shapes copied on archaeological finds.

We will also see how to use the very ashes and embers produced to roast / cook / bake snacks that pre-pottery cultures or people hiking and travelling through History might have used.

The menu will include a meat stew, a meatless  dish, a dessert chosen by the pupils on the day and a selection of creations to be enjoyed around the fire or taken home, including : cheese making and flavouring,  handmade butter, fire-baked flatbreads (various techniques)... And potentially more, depending on time and individual interests!

There will be time for a Q&A session and/or chat at the end of the day to answer any specific questions you may have about archaeology, historic cooking, etc, all in a relaxed atmosphere.

Please bring your own face mask and a couple of containers to take your creations home (though we will provide one container per person).

If you have any dietary requirements, allergies or strong dislikes, please do  let us know in advance! Everybody is welcome, but we need a bit of time to adapt our ingredients to suit everyone.

Accommodation is not included but if required it is available within the local area, some suggestions can be found on our 'local accommodation' page - please arrange this yourself. Refreshments are provided on the day. Lunch is cooked and shared as part of the workshop, though feel free to bring your own lunch or snacks if you like.
