Mesolithic Shale Pendants Sunday 18th July 2021 10am - 4pm
Mesolithic Shale Pendants
Join archaeologist and heritage education specialist, Dr Frankie Callaghan in this workshop exploring prehistoric shale pendants - focusing in particular on the Star Carr pendant, which at 11,000 years old is currently the earliest known art in Britain.
Workshop participants will be fully-guided through this immersive-craft process; utilising prehistoric methods and materials to create their pendants. These include; period-accurate raw materials, flint tools and cordage - all of which participants can take home.
Following an interactive discussion on the archaeological evidence for the Mesolithic period; participants will get the opportunity to engage hands-on with its archaeology through our handling collection - including replica and authentic material culture based on finds from across Mesolithic Europe.
Frankie will demonstrate the prehistoric technology, tools and ancient skills used to craft this shale pendant to the group - after which participants will receive 1:1 guidance, as they begin to craft their own replica Mesolithic shale pendants. The pendants made on the workshop are the participants own to take home with them.
