Anglo Saxon pottery workshop - 5th September 2019 10-4pm
So what's next in this series of workshops? Anglo Saxon: For nearly 400 years Britain was under Roman rule and as part of the Roman empire it benefited from the mass produced goods of Roman industry. The potters' wheel was the main method of pottery production, creating standardised kiln fired pottery that was distributed throughout Britain. But all this came to an end in 410 AD when, after repeated Saxon raids, the Roman Emperor Honorius tells the inhabitants of these islands to “Look to your own defenses”. Over the following few decades, fewer and fewer Roman products were seen on these islands, and pottery production which had been so industrialised reverts to it's Prehistoric roots, the potters' wheel is abandoned, hand forming taking its place. The result of this is that small scale individual workshops flourish and it is the products of these potters that we will explore in this workshop.
Graham Taylor of Potted History is one of the UK's best historical (and prehistorical) potters with a deep understanding of the background archaeology and pottery theory. His work can be seen on display at Stonehenge and Hadrian's Wall (as well as many other museums).
Participants will have to opportunity to make their own Anglo Saxon Bowls, Urns, Cups, etc. With lots, information, hints, tips, help where needed and encouragement, you will have the opportunity to make at least two pots. All materials and equipment will be provided, although wearing old clothes and/or bringing along an apron would probably be a good idea. Graham will give you sufficient information to allow you fire them in an authentic manner. No previous pottery or archaeological experience is needed, but if you have either you will be able to build on the knowledge that you already have..
